How to Improve Search Rank Position

This is the number one question on everyone’s lips, and it seems like you need experts doing every step, but in reality, it takes time but you can do much of it, I will explain.

First thing you need is a website that has its SEO (search engine optimisation) in order, because if your site sucks in the eyes of the search engines, let’s face facts, it probably sucks to visitors as well. You site needs to be fast, responsive (good on all devices), interesting, unique, popular and technically good. Below is my highly simplified advice on getting your site on page one of your search engine.

Let’s talk about rank, there are what we call the golden positions on search results, and the one you are after is the organic positions one to three, organic meaning not paid for, it is what I chase for all my sites. This position takes time and strategy, so you can’t just build a site and bam you are there, you have to follow a process, which I will discuss here.

So lets cover these areas…

Fast

This is pretty easy, if your site when measured from a local server takes more than three seconds to fully load, you are in strife. You can have an amazing site, with amazing offers, but if it is slow, you don’t rank, it is that simple. Message here, pay a little extra and get a Australian server that is not overcrowded and is zippy and loads your site quickly, and make sure your site is well coded so it doesn’t bog down the server.

Check your site speed here (select closest server to you). –

Responsive

Ever been to a website on your mobile and it doesn’t look right, the text is small, or large, the images are spread too wide and it is painful to look at, compare that to a responsive site that checks your device screen size and creates a site that fits perfectly. I only build responsive sites, anything else and you will be penalised by the search engines.

Interesting

Ever heard of the bounce rate, you can Google it, a bounce rate is how the search engines measure if people arrive on your site and leave immediately, a high bounce rate is not good for your site, the other metric is average session duration, which needs to be over 2 minutes, if people leave your site quickly, it must be boring and you will be penalised. The other area here is to stay relevant, meaning you should marry exactly up to what you advertise, remember Google wants to deliver relevant content, stay pure and relevant if you want a good rank.

You should also have a good percentage of your keywords in the first few paragraphs, h1 headings and page title, but don’t over do it, it must sound natural to read.

Unique

Ever heard the phrase duplicate content, it is a big no no on the web now, copying images and text will be immediately detected and you will not rank. Always write your own material or pay someone, take your own picks or get them from a site like www.pexels.com that shares images. Do not copy other sites, or you will be detected and you will lose rank.

Popular & Blogs

This is where social media comes in, have a blog or write cool articles and share them, and if you are lucky and have something interesting, people will share it and share some more, once the search engines see large shares, they will mark you as popular and raise your rank.

I cannot state enough about writing blogs from your page and sharing them, this is a key strategy you should follow. Write about one per fortnight and make them really helpful for people.

You should also have lots of quality sites linking to you if possible. This is a complex subject that could take a long time to explain, but basically if you have an interesting, helpful, popular site, you will be rewarded.

Make sure your BING Business, Yelp and Google business places are live and up to date with the correct categories matching your services.

Technically good

Last but not least, make sure your website gets an A mark on the popular SEO testing sites like the below link. Many times you will need help with this area, however it is critical for success and well worth the effort.

Summary

If you want a site that is always on the search engines front page, it takes time and a good strategy, make sure you keep all of the above areas well managed and you will reap the rewards of a popular, interesting, quality site.

How to make a Fast WordPress Website

How to make a Fast WordPress Website

Have you been wondering exactly How to make a Fast WordPress Website that loads in 1-2 seconds?

Did you know that Google and other search engines penalise you if your site takes longer than 3 seconds to load?

You might read online that you need to do lots of fancy stuff, including server side caches and other technologies. The truth is that it is all about the design and server location.

Go for minimalist

When I create a WordPress website, I almost always use the default themes like Twenty Twenty, or Twenty Nineteen etc. I then Tweak them with a child theme and my own CSS code.

This keeps them lean and fast, and reduces the maintenance of the site significantly.

If you love lots of bells and whistles and top heavy themes, you will find your site performance will drop.

Reduce the plugins

Sometimes I see websites with 50 or more plugins. In fact I have created them for clients who insist on every feature known to man. When you create your own child theme you should be able to keep your plugins down under the 20 mark. My website has just 11 plugins, and these include the required ones (in my opinion) like Up Draft back up, Yoast, WP Fastest Cache.

Don’t be lured into adding more and more features. Each plugin has the potential to slow you down and crash your site during updates.

Learn to work within the theme without unnecessary plugins.

Server location

If you sell to Australian clients, don’t use the overseas server as it will add seconds to your load time. You will see server hosts for as little as a few dollars per month. Most of these are not based in Australia.

I only use Australian servers, and recommend you do the same. Even though they cost around $10 per month more for an average small site.

Keep your site hosted in the country you sell to as your primary market.

Necessary evils

Some things you will need to add on that will slow your site down, like Google Analytics code and Facebook chat. These will ad a second or two to your page load times, however they are beneficial and worth it.

Optimise your images

Try and avid too many large images and ensure your images are optimised. There are many online optimisation websites that are free and easy to use.

To use them, simply visit the site and upload your images. You can then download the optimised version, all for free.

Here is one I use. https://tinypng.com/

Cache

Ensure you have a WordPress cache plugin, I use WP Fastest Cache, free version. This will speed up your site, but you will need to experiment with the settings to get the best result.

Summary

It’s no point having a beautiful site if people bounce off it as it takes too long to load. It’s also no point if the search engines don’t display your website.

Keep your WordPress website lean and fast, and keep your clients happy.

Existing Website Review

Existing Website Review

Do you have a website that could do with a website review? Have you ever wondered if your site is well put together or is likely to rank well. Is your keyword density ok and your call to action well balanced.

I will review your front page and one random deep page and cover all the areas below.

First Impressions

When people land on your home page, the worse thing that can happen is they bounce off and leave immediately. Not only could you lose a prospect, you also get penalised by search engines as your website is not interesting, or relevant to the people landing on it.

Your site will be checked on PC and mobile in the website review process. I will cover things like the overall look, page load speed, page load behaviour, font, colours and your business message.

Relevancy

There is an old saying in marketing that goes something like this. If you want your message to be clear, show a 7 year old for 5 seconds, then take it away and ask them what your business does. If they are not correct in the answer, your message is not clear enough. I will check your message and give you suggestions to consider.

Site Performance

I will run a full diagnostic report on several of the top tools in the market and check your back end performance. I will offer you advice on what you should do now, and what is less urgent.

SEO Performance

I will run keyword analysis in your text, your text to code ratios, keyword density, meta tags, and your page rank for what you tell me your primary services are. I will also offer advice of what needs fixing.

Responsiveness

You will receive a report showing what your site looks like on all devices, including Android phones, iPhone, Tablets and PCs. So you will know exactly how your site performs on each device.

Marketing Visibility

I will check your site ranking on Bing, Yahoo, Google. I will also check your Google Business Places and BING Business listing and offer advice on how to improve these.

Linking

You will also receive a report on how many pages link to you, the quality of your links, your cross linking, internal and external links.

CTAs

Are you call to actions appropriate, or are they too bold and intrusive, or meek and mild and unlikely to get traction, I will offer my experience here too.
